Here are some terms we've used in BASS EXPERT and what we think they mean.
- Hellgramite: A dark brown larva of the dobsonfly, used as live bait.
- Hump: An underwater bump, like an island that didn't quite make it to
the surface.
- Inlet: A type of cover defined as stream or creek entrance; a tributary.
- Jig: A lead-headed bait with a single hook and a skirt of fibers.
- Jigging: Moving a lure up and down.
- Jigging Spoon: A shiny metal lure made to be jerked up and down. Examples
include the Haddock Jig 'N Spoon, Hopkins #075 Shorty, and Kastmaster.
- Light Cover: A type of cover defined as thinly distributed surface cover.
- Medium Cover: A type of cover defined as fairly heavy surface cover, with
plenty of gaps.
- Minnow: Small little fishies. Example, threadfin shad. NOTE: Fishing with
goldfish is illegal in many states. Escapees often overrun the lakes.
- Minnow Lure: A wooden or plastic lure that imitates a minnow. Also known
as twitch baits, this category includes the Rapala, Redfin, Spoonbill, Bomber
Long A, and Bang-O-Lure.
- Nightcrawler: A really jumbo earthworm. Check your lawn out at night.
- Pads: A type of cover defined as lily pads.
- pH: A measure of acidity or alkalinity of water, ranging in value from
0 to 14. A pH of 7.0 is neutral; the lower the pH the more acid the water;
the higher the pH the more alkaline it is.
